The practice of Taekwondo (Korean Martial Art) dates back to approximate five thousand years. There are good reasons for its long existence. The details and history of Taekwondo is in “Chapter-2” of this book. Those who practice Taekwondo - martial art, are benefited in five folds:- i.e.
1. Discipline.
2. Self-confidence.
3. Self-defense.
4. Physical fitness.
5. Olympic Sport.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) adopted Taekwondo sport as one of the official events in 1980. But, despite the globalizing of the Art of Taekwondo in world-wide, (i.e. Olympic sport, World Taekwondo Championships), till date, we cannot find proper books on proper theories for the practitioner/instructors of Taekwondo in India.
In forty five years of my experience in the Art of Taekwondo as Founder of Taekwondo in India in 1975 and after qualifying as an International Master Instructor in 1982 and International Referee in 1983, it has been my desire to write a comprehensive “Taekwondo Textbook” on the Art of Taekwondo for the benefit to those who do not have the opportunity to train under a dedicated Master. In this context, the theory and practicing with “Taekwondo Textbook” will provide a shortcut to the trainee’s ability and elite Taekwondo experts.
Although there are many books on Martial Art such as Judo, Karate, Kung-fu etc, but not on Taekwondo. This is the first “Taekwondo Textbook” in India, which spots light on a series of scientific researches on Taekwondo including a wide range of techniques for the Instructors and Trainees as well.
All techniques in this book are illustrated with step-by-step instructions using Korean language. This book contains training in belt grading system to enable students to practice from the beginner’s level “White Belt” up to an advance grade “Black Belt 1st Dan”. The curriculum of higher Dan i.e. 2nd Dan and above is available in Volume-II & Volume-III of the Textbook.
As represented India in numerous International / World and Olympic Taekwondo Competitions, I have found, students learn faster and better with systematic instructions in techniques. “Taekwondo Textbook” is written for the same purpose and I believe that a student with no experience in TAEKWONDO can also learn from this “Taekwondo Textbook” and achieve a fairly high standard by practicing-out alone. Those who wish to qualify in “Colour Belts promotion” or “Black Belt Dan Promotion Test” can achieve qualifications through a correspondence or personal appearance after seeking a registration in Taekwondo Academy of India. In the end of this book, there is an application for those who wish to become the member of Taekwondo Academy of India and want to qualify for the higher Colour Belts test or Taekwondo Dan Promotion. Trainees can correspond by e-mail to Grand Master Jimmy R. Jagtiani - “The Author” for their convenience: - E-mail: jimmy_jagtiani@yahoo.co.in or visit our website:-
In preparing this “Taekwondo Textbook” almost after fourteen years, I have endeavoured to use maximum text with pictorial sequences having special focus on the latest techniques through a systematic arrangement of illustrations, so that the reader can begin his/her training immediately without spending too much of time in content learning.
Taekwondo is not only a Martial Art or an Art of Self defense but also used into physical fitness, culture & Oriental philosophy of life. The benefit of this “ART” should reach to every able Indian Citizen, through this Textbook. My personal desire is that all senior instructor / trainees who had learned under unauthorized person should come together and all such disputes should end in the name of TAEKWONDO, I shall be happy to welcome them with the spirit of sports and discipline.
I wish to express my appreciation to all my senior students, instructors who are with me and assisted me in a way or the other (their photographs are on page-10), my wife Komal J. Jagtiani in making this book a success, including Mrs. Urmil Tekwani the Editor.
